Greenbaums "shoulda, coulda, woulda WON" their first game of the season but lost in a "Slugfest" to J&N 23-22. Greenbaums made 4 or 5 fielding errors and left 3 runners stranded on 3rd Base - that shoulda scored - and was losing after 5 innings 16-6. Larry Stewart had a triple for 2 RBIs and Richie Sicardo belted a bases-loaded triple for 3 RBIs - and both scored on singles by other players during Greenbaum's 10 run rally. "Most-Offensive" Players for Greenbaums: Ernie Martin batted 5 for 5 3 RBIs; George Hammer batted 4 for 4; Bob "Woody" Wood batted 4 for 5 2 doubles; Larry Stewart also batted 4 for 5 2 doubles; Sammy Duke batted 4 for 5 2 RBIs; Lou Dimeo batted 3 for 4 2 RBIs; Jack Whyte batted 3 for 4; Ed Bergamini batted 3 for 5; Gary Landman batted 2 for 3 plus a SAC Fly and 1 RBI. "Outstanding Defensive Plays" for Greenbaums: Left Fielder Stan Silverman and Left-Centerfielder Woody Wood each made 3 or 4 good running catches; BUT - the "Defensive Play of the Game" for Greenbaums came with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd Base. A batter belted a come-backer line-drive to pitcher Sammy Duke, and the ball bounced up off his outstretched glove to his bare hand, and then onto his shoulder, and then a half second later into his bare hand for an inning-ending out - which would have resulted in two RBIs - if not for Sammy's "Spectacular Catch" ! ! ! Also - defensively it should be noted that Greenbaum's DEFENSE prevented Stan's 5th Run from scoring in 4 Innings, which coulda helped Greenbaums WIN . . . IF ONLY the final score was 10 runs closer. . . . .

Bob "Woody" Wood batted 2 for 4 scored 3 runs with 1 RBI; George Hammer, Rick Lyons, Jack Whyte and Steve Lynch each batted 2 for 3. Sammy Duke batted 1 for 3 with a 2B, plus a Sac. Fly for 2 RBIs. Sammy was the Winning Pitcher - and caught two hard-hit line drives to his left . . . IN HIS GLOVE ! One was in the bottom of the 8th Inning - which probably saved two runs from scoring! Woody made a great defensive catch in Left-Centerfield with the strong winds playing havoc with the fly ball, and 3rd Baseman Ed Bergamini made a great shoe-string catch of a hard-hit line drive, and threw to Larry Stewart at 1st Base to double-up the runner! Greenbaum's defense was "Almost Perfect" - just two or three errors.

J&N beat Greenbaum 15-13 at Whitesell Leading by 6 runs going into the bottom of the 8th inning J&N held off a furious 4 run rally by GRB when with the bases loaded and one out Jaime Pagan made the play of the game by snaring a line drive and doubling off the runner on 3B to end the game dramatically!!! J&N made a GREAT Game-Ending double-play in the bottom of the last inning to edge out Greenbaums 15-13. For Greenbaums teammates, it was another "IF ONLY . . . WE Woulda - Coulda - Shoulda Won!" For Greenbaums: Roger Simon 4 for 4 3 RBIs; Gary Landman 3 for 3 a single, double & triple and 2 RBIs; Rich Sicardo and Ernie Martin both 3 for 4; Sammy Duke batted 2 for 3 with a double plus a SAC FLY for 2 RBIs; Bob "Woody" Wood and Eddie Bergamini both batted 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. Unfortunately, Greenbaums batters left runners stranded on 2nd & 3rd Base three times - a good hit each inning woulda scored 6 more runs FOR THE WIN. Losing 15 to 9 in the bottom of the last Inning, Greenbaums rallied with three consecutive singles (well - assuming "A Walk is as Good as a HIT") and Larry Stewart belted a double for 2 RBIs. After one out, and three more consecutive singles, two more runs scored to make the score 15-13 and with bases-loaded the tying run was on 2nd base and the winning run was on 1st base - with one out. Stan Silverman then belted a hard-hit line-drive over Shortstop about 140 feet out . . . BUT Short-Centerfielder Jamie Pagan - playing Stan as a pull-hitter took two or three steps and made a leaping catch to ROB Stan of a really nice RBI hit. Unfortunately, Greenbaum's base runner on 3rd Base didn't realize that J&N's Short-Centerfielder was playing in short Left Field and he was doubled-up at 3rd Base - on a close play - for a game-ending double play! After the game, J&N awarded the GAME BALL to Jamie Pagan . . . and . . . to "Add Insult to Injury" HE asked Stan Silverman to Autograph IT. HA !
In a hard-fought game at the Sheafe Road Field, Greenbaums scored 7 runs in the last two innings to beat Safeguard 21-16. Score by Innings: Greenbaums: 3 3 2 0 2 4 5 2 = 21 Safeguard: 5 0 2 2 5 2 0 0 = 16 Most Offensive Hitters for Greenbaums: "Woody" Wood batted 5 for 5, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs; Stan Silverman batted 4 for 4 including a double and a solo Home Run to lead off the 8th inning; Stan scored 2 runs, and with a SAC FLY, he also had 3 RBIs; Ernie Martin batted 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, scored twice and had 4 RBIs; Larry Stewart also batted 4 for 5, scored twice and had 2 RBIs; Jack Whyte batted 3 for 4 and scored three times; Ed Bergamini batted 3 for 5, and had 2 RBIs; Rich Sicardo and Gary Landman both batted 3 for 5, scored twice and had 1 RBI each; Roger Simon also batted 3 for 5 with one run scored and 1 RBI. Other players contributed two hits each for the "Team Win". Greenbaum's defense made a few errors in the first 4 or 5 innings - including throwing the ball into the infield "to no one in particular" a few times rather than hitting the Cut-Off Man, which allowed base runners to take an extra base and then score on a single. BUT Greenbaum's defense held Safeguard scoreless in the 7th and 8th innings when players made key defensive plays: In the 7th inning, with a runner on 1st Base, the batter hit a grounder up the middle to Sammy Duke's right, Fortunately, Sammy refrained from reaching out with his bare hand to try to catch the ball, and it bounced to Short-Centerfielder Gary Landman who caught the ball, ran to 2nd Base and fired a Strike to First Baseman Larry Stewart for a nice double-play. the bottom of the last inning, the lead-off batter hit another hard-hit grounder past Sammy Duke, and Gary Landman ran in, made the catch and threw to 1st Base . . . but his hurried throw was low, and Larry Stewart made a great short-hop back-handed-catch for the out! The next batter belted a line-drive to Right Field and Stan Silverman made a really nice catch for out number 2. Other Greenbaum's teammates made key defensive plays during the game for a nice "Team Win". Sammy Duke was the winning pitcher.

With Greenbaum missing 3 key players a number of players had to play out of position because apparently a team is not allowed 4 second basemen.
